Bye bye summer!

It is a teeny bit sad when August comes to an end.  Sometimes September feels like the end of the summer, with the night’s drawing in just a touch and a mini evening chill in the air.

Looking ahead, October and November can also be glorious months here, especially for walkers AND especially in Devon.  It isn’t too cold for a good stomp, and it’s not so hot you overheat!

Coastal Walks

Dartmouth and the surrounding area have some superb (and very hard to beat for scenery) coastal walks.  Dramatic cliffs, beautiful beaches, quiet coves, pretty villages are all within this designated area of outstanding natural beauty.

The South West Coast path, covers 630 miles of unique coastline walks. Starting at Minehead in Somerset it runs along the coastline of Exmoor, continuing along the coast of North Devon into Cornwall. It follows the entire coastline of Cornwall, goes across the mouth of the River Tamar and continues into Devon. After running along the south coast of Devon, and coming straight through Dartmouth, it then follows the Dorset coastline before finally ending at Poole Harbour.  The best bit about the coast path though is that it is FREE to walk or hike!

Stay in Dartmouth

If you are staying in Dartmouth you can choose from several sections of the South West Coast path to discover: maybe Kingswear to Froward Point, a challenging but breath-taking 5 mile walk, or the Diamond Jubilee Way, a 3.5 mile walk through delightful countryside as well as coastline.

Wherever you decide to walk, be sure to book your accommodation and restaurants early! Dartmouth gets busy year round.  At Dartside holidays, we have a range of accommodation to suit all budgets and taste.  From high end luxury above one of our restaurants, the Angel (with Head Chef Elly Wentworth), to terrific value above our retail shop, Hollands Leisure.  But most importantly they all have a spectacular view of the River Dart, which to be honest will be the only thing you will be looking at!

We are also proud to have Platform 1 Champagne Bar & Restaurant as part of our group, and as a guest in our accommodation, you are entitled to a 10% discount when dining at either venue or shopping in Hollands Leisure.

Book direct with us!

The last point of note, is that all holidays come with a parking space, which if you have been to Dartmouth before, you will realise this is like gold dust in the town!

Visit our website now to see what is available and book yourself a treat for later in the year.  It is ALWAYS cheaper to book direct with us and it is always worth a quick call or message even if we are full, as we do sometimes have last minute cancellations.

We hope to see you soon!

Things to do in Dartmouth!

If you are staying with us, in one of our Riverside apartments, you will know there is a lot to be said for sitting on your balcony watching the world (and the river) drift by.  It really is a very pleasant way to while away your relaxing break, maybe with a cold glass of wine in hand…

If you are staying with us, you will know the Holland Group have 2 fabulous restaurants for you to choose from, whether you fancy some superb seafood in Platform 1, or want to treat yourself to some fine dining in The Angel with Head Chef Elly Wentworth.  In fact, Dartmouth is full of amazing places to eat and drink.

But for when you aren’t eating, and maybe for the more active among you, there is so much to see and do in Dartmouth.

A circular walk from Dartmouth along the coastal path to Little Dartmouth and back is a very lovely way to spend your morning or afternoon. Walk along Newcomen Rd and South Town to reach 16th century Dartmouth Castle.  You can either enjoy a pitstop here at Dartmouth Castle Tea Rooms, and admire one of the most beautifully located fortresses in England, or continue walking!  Follow the coastal path down through Sugary Cove, up and around the headland to Little Dartmouth passing through what can only be described as breath-taking scenery.  Just follow signs and head back into town on a slightly shorter return leg!

Dog friendly, the (fairly tough in parts) walk takes about 2-3 hours depending on how speedy you are and how many photographs you take!

For the water babies among you, why not try your hand at Paddle boarding?  It can be a great fun and relaxing way to spend time with loved ones.  The Paddle Shack in Dartmouth offer lessons, trips and private parties, all in and around the beautiful River Dart.  You can even paddle to the pub! Dartmouth

If you enjoy the experience, you can buy paddle boards at Holland Leisure, our shoe and outdoor leisure shop, located in Dartmouth under our ‘Riverside’ apartments.

Dartmouth has its very own theatre and cinema, The Flavel Arts Centre, which screens some fantastic live screening performances year-round from the National Theatre and the Royal Opera House, as well as new film screenings every week.  COVID restrictions are affecting live performances at the moment, but there is always something to see and do at the Flavel, which also houses the library.  Perfect for a date film night! www.theflavel.org.uk

Lastly, on a rainy day, you could book into Dartmouth Escape Rooms…a brilliant concept, fun for all the family and one ideally suited for inclement weather. Challenging, but not impossible, you will put together the clues in order to escape! Visit https://www.hqescaperooms.com/ to book.

We look forward to welcoming you to Dartside Holidays in Dartmouth soon, and please feel free to ask any of our staff for advice on what to do whilst you are here!
