The Holland Group are first to install electric car chargers in Dartmouth
The Holland Group are delighted to have installed the first publicly available car chargers in Dartmouth at Dartside Court in Clarence Street TQ6 9NW. Check out the location in the brilliant navigation app What3Words: perch.whizzing.pure
These fast Chargers are situated in a covered area under our holiday apartments. There are two chargers in separate bays and fully signed from the road.
With the electric vehicle disruption (EV) well underway now, people have been wondering how long they will have to wait for public chargers to be installed in the town. You don’t have to wait any longer!
Not everyone in Dartmouth has off-street parking for charging an EV and so public chargers are essential. We hope our new installation will encourage residents without the capability of off-street charging at home to now consider getting an EV for the first time.
Although this is new technology to everyone it is rapidly becoming popular. The Holland Group are investing in this new technology to encourage more local people to drive electric and to attract EV-owning visitors to come and stay in the town.
Although the process for ‘refuelling’ EVs by charging their batteries is new for everyone and may seem a bit confusing, it is very similar to charging your smartphone. There are clear instructions at the charge bays and 24/7 support by phone or online. There is also a contact number for the local company EVC in case you have any questions!
One last thing we would like please is your feedback. Please let us know how you are getting on and any problems you may have encountered. Use the number or email below.
If you are interested in getting an EV or finding out how to use a public charger, EVC can help.
The Holland Group are delighted to announce that 2 brand new Electric Vehicle Fast Charge points will be installed by the beginning of May at Dartside Court in Dartmouth. There will be more to follow throughout the summer, including super-fast rapid charging. We will be providing the only publicly accessible charging in our town and surrounding areas, the closest are currently in Torbay.
Electric vehicle development is moving on at full speed; did you know a full car charge costs only around 10% of a tank of fuel? With fuel prices rising, it is a good time to consider the switch to the clean side!
So, if you are coming to stay with us after May, or are intending to; have an electric car, or are thinking about getting one, do get in touch to see how you can keep moving during your stay and when you leave! You could even charge your car while you enjoy a long leisurely lunch with us in one of our restaurants, Platform 1 or the Angel.
As part of our winter refurbishment plan, General Manager Mark Readman felt the holiday apartments could do with an injection of colourful art on the walls. As a result of talking to a man, who knew a man, who also knew a man (this is Dartmouth life for you!) he came across local artist Ian Gunn and Dartside holidays are now thrilled to be collaborating with him by exhibiting his exceptional work.
Because, as Ian says, he ‘grew up in black and white’ he has a penchant for the exuberant use of colour and jokes that whenever he starts a new painting, artist suppliers Winsor & Newton’s share price goes up! We bet he’s one of their favourite customers!
He recently returned to England after spending many years in New York City as creative director of several advertising agencies. Small wonder then he loves a splash of colour to catch the eye! It is this background that influences his work, often including a subtle use of humour.
Ian uses acrylics and occasionally employs mixed media and his work is seen as conceptual, minimalist and bold. He has exhibited widely and his work has been sold through Saatchi Art. To see more of his work, check out his website at www.iangunnart.com
You can gaze upon Ian’s art if you stay with us! We have approximately 35 paintings on display across our holiday apartments. So, if you fall in love with one and would like to buy it, just ask us during your stay!
At last, the weather seems to be changing, we are having a bit of sun here in Dartmouth and we are looking forward to welcoming lots of visitors soon.
All of our holiday apartments have had an end of season freshen up during the winter, and some have undergone extensive renovations, with shiny new bathrooms installed. We think they look great and hope you will too.
Explore the UK
Travel may still be difficult for the foreseeable future with many countries insisting on vaccine passports, boosters and testing. It presents all of us with a fabulous opportunity to discover what the UK can offer. We may be slightly biased but we believe the West Country is one of the friendliest, most picturesque areas to visit, as well as having quite often the best weather.
For those of you who haven’t stayed with us before, most apartments have simply outstanding views of the River Dart. You also get parking included with your holiday, which is a huge bonus here as parking is very limited! Staying on the waterside is a perfect way to make the most of your holiday in our beautiful town. The river is always busy with the views constantly changing throughout the year. We are very proud to have received a Traveller Review Award from Booking.com. At a time when travel is still challenging, they say we have gone above and beyond to give our guests incredible experiences; a real testament to our brilliant team.

Mark Readman is Group General Manager of the Holland Group which includes The Angel, Platform 1, Dartside Holidays, Holland Leisure and Holland Footwear. Behind the scenes Mark has seen the Group through some turbulent times including near bankruptcy and the aftermath of Brexit not to mention a pandemic! His well-judged and level headed approach to all of these challenges, as well as the calm authority he radiates, has enabled the Group to emerge relatively unscathed, ready to face the next chapter with confidence.
We caught up with Mark to find out more about his background, what he used to do for 50p and which sporting star once drove into the back of him!
Where were you born? I was born in Kings Lynn, Norfolk although I only lived there for 6 months. I spent my childhood up to the age of 15 in Andover. I was always a really sporty child and played Junior County level tennis and squash. In my more formative years, we moved to Brighton and I switched to football and cricket.
Earliest memory? I can remember, aged 4, being taken out for the day and when I arrived home my middle sister had been born. I am an elder brother to 3 sisters.
Education? Unsurprisingly, I went on to study Sports Management at the most sporting University, Loughborough, where one of my claims to fame is that Seb Coe, also a student there at the time, drove into the back of me in his new Saab Turbo. Whilst living in the States I also completed a Masters degree in Leisure Management at Purdue Uni, Chicago.
What was your first job? I had a paper round and had to cycle miles delivering to farms out near Lancing College. For an extra 50p I was also responsible for delivering bread which would get very squashed on the back of the bike rack.
How long have you been in your current role as Group General Manager of the Holland Group? I have been here since August 2019 and have overseen the turnaround of the Group. Prior to this I worked in many roles in the US and UK, including running a Squash and Fitness Club, Golf Operating Manager of a Country Club, as well as the Executive Manager of several large golf resorts plus holiday parks. I feel I have zig zagged into my current role and didn’t really have a career master plan as a lot of my contemporaries did. I think this has really made my life more interesting.
Favourite country you have visited? I lived and worked in the US for 10 years and love the beaches on the east
coast such as Wilmington, North Carolina. I really like travelling to different
parts of the world and just doing what the locals do. The most beautiful
country I have visited is Sri Lanka.
Biggest passion? I am a sports fanatic, all kinds, playing, spectating and find I can watch
anything and get involved. In fact, it’s fair to say that I love any type of
competition. I get really immersed in things like The Great British Bake Off
and then very emotional when contestants get knocked out.
Best meal you’ve ever eaten? I’m not totally sure where this was but I went on a trip with my Dad to the
Hebrides and we had the most amazing herring dish in a pub. I like eating good,
local food and especially seafood.
Favourite drink? It would have to be a nice glass of chilled dry white wine. I also drink a lot
of tea and am quite particular about the colour, not too strong, not too weak
and just the right amount of milk.
Perfect day? Spending time relaxing with old friends followed by a special meal in the
evening. Good food and good wine, plus if we could fit in a round of golf as
well, all the better.
Loves? I love walking on the coast path and just being with my family.
Dislikes? I detest all types of injustice and will always support the small person
against the big corporation.
Interesting fact about you? While living in the US I worked in the film industry with George Lucas on
Radioland Murders and also as a production assistant on several big films
including Last of the Mohicans and The Road to Welville.
Worst trait? I am a fast driver, in fact I drive way too fast and have had lots of speeding
Most treasured possessions? My golf clubs and the dog.
What single thing would improve the quality of your life? I am very lucky to have a good quality of life, but it would be great to be
able to see into the future and a secure future for my children.

Dartmouth is a picturesque, pretty town in the South Hams area of Devon set at the mouth of the River Dart. The town is certainly steeped in history, with many buildings dating back to the 14th century with the oldest, The Cherub Pub, being built around 1380! It is also full of fantastic pubs (yes, the Cherub is one of them!) and restaurants, shops and galleries, an arts centre and much more!
But you may not want to wander very far from your balcony with a view on your mini-break.
Think long coastal walks wrapped up in woolly jumpers taking in the outstanding scenery. Perhaps a browse and a shop followed by a glass of something warming by an open fire in one of the towns many pubs. Then maybe disappear back to your apartment with some goodies bought from our independent delicatessens and a bottle (or two) of wine from the fabulous local vintners Dartmouth Wine Company, to sit back and enjoy the river views drift by.
This deal is only available when booked direct with us so do not hesitate and pick up the phone or go online to book today!
It is a teeny bit sad when August comes to an end. Sometimes September feels like the end of the summer, with the night’s drawing in just a touch and a mini evening chill in the air.
Looking ahead, October and November can also be glorious months here, especially for walkers AND especially in Devon. It isn’t too cold for a good stomp, and it’s not so hot you overheat!
Dartmouth and the surrounding area have some superb (and very hard to beat for scenery) coastal walks. Dramatic cliffs, beautiful beaches, quiet coves, pretty villages are all within this designated area of outstanding natural beauty.
The South West Coast path, covers 630 miles of unique coastline walks. Starting at Minehead in Somerset it runs along the coastline of Exmoor, continuing along the coast of North Devon into Cornwall. It follows the entire coastline of Cornwall, goes across the mouth of the River Tamar and continues into Devon. After running along the south coast of Devon, and coming straight through Dartmouth, it then follows the Dorset coastline before finally ending at Poole Harbour. The best bit about the coast path though is that it is FREE to walk or hike!
Stay in Dartmouth
If you are staying in Dartmouth you can choose from several sections of the South West Coast path to discover: maybe Kingswear to Froward Point, a challenging but breath-taking 5 mile walk, or the Diamond Jubilee Way, a 3.5 mile walk through delightful countryside as well as coastline.
Wherever you decide to walk, be sure to book your accommodation and restaurants early! Dartmouth gets busy year round. At Dartside holidays, we have a range of accommodation to suit all budgets and taste. From high end luxury above one of our restaurants, the Angel (with Head Chef Elly Wentworth), to terrific value above our retail shop, Hollands Leisure. But most importantly they all have a spectacular view of the River Dart, which to be honest will be the only thing you will be looking at!
We are also proud to have Platform 1 Champagne Bar & Restaurant as part of our group, and as a guest in our accommodation, you are entitled to a 10% discount when dining at either venue or shopping in Hollands Leisure.

Dartmouth is actually rather beautiful in the winter, and a perfect time to visit and explore the area. Located on the River Dart, and it’s pretty winding streets, there is always something to see and do. The river is busy all year round, with super yachts, visiting cruise ships and pleasure craft, as well as the working boats such as the ferries or fishing boats. With a rich maritime heritage, Dartmouth dates back as far as 1147, and over the centuries has managed to retain many of its original features. Just wandering through the streets of Dartmouth you will see an eclectic mix of architecture amongst the buildings and streets, many dating back to the 16th century. We have a castle, a naval college, a theatre and even a steam train service. There is much to recommend this vibrant harbour town.
At Dartside holidays, we do have some availability in November through to the middle of December. You will not beat our views and the minimum stay reduces to just 2 nights! Our Angel 1 luxury apartment could be just what you are looking for: beautifully appointed and located right on the sea front. This apartment sleeps 4 people, and 2 nights in mid-November start from £190 inclusive. Or you might prefer one of our Riverside apartments. Comfortable, amazing value, with beautiful views and a balcony – these start at just £130 for up to 5 guests. Both come with a parking space too. So, an affordable break really is just a click away.
Think cosy pubs with open fires, breath-taking coastal walks (make sure you wrap up warm!) and interesting shops. You can book a table in our award-winning restaurant The Angel – Taste of Devon for a special fine dining experience or try a relaxed lunch in our Champagne and Seafood restaurant Platform 1. There are lots of other fabulous restaurants to try in Dartmouth, it is well known as a foodie destination, and you may have trouble fitting it all in! But whatever you do plan early. With foreign travel still very much in a volatile state, staycations are even more popular, and it would be wise to plan your meals out as well as your accommodation. If booking directly with us, we guarantee the best price, and we are always at the end of the phone to help with organising your stay.
So, head over to our website now to check availability and count down the days until you can watch the world go by from your prime Dartside position.
